How We Work

Our mission to protect the country’s tropical forests is enabled by the US Tropical Forest Conservation Act (TFCA). Under this, a ‘debt-for-nature’ agreement converts the Philippines’ debt into funds that will be used by the Foundation for forest protection activities.
Through this, we have been providing grants and technical assistance to people, projects, organizations and communities, all with the ultimate goal of protecting the Philippine forests.
Through the first tropical conservation fund (or TFCA1), in 2002, $8.25M was allocated for the protection of Philippine forests from 2002 to 2016. Due to promising results, the second tropical conservation fund (TFCA2) was allocated in 2013, amounting to over $32M to scale up forest protection activities and mitigate climate change in the Philippines from 2017 to 2027.
