August 12, 2016 FFP 10

The Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation (PTFCF), in partnership with the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD), hosted the book launch for “The Mammals of Luzon Island: A Biogeographic Perspective on Evolution, Ecology, and Conservation”, last August 10, 2016. It was held at the Institute of Biology Auditorium, University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City.

During the launch, Dr. Lawrence Heaney and Dr. Danilo Balete, two of the authors of the book, revealed that Luzon, an island in the Philippines, has the greatest concentration of unique mammals in the world. While writing the book, the authors were able to discover 28 new species of bats and rodents. Nine of which are yet to be named.

Dr. Lawrence Heaney, one of the authors, signed copies of the book during the launch.

The authors also stressed the importance of conserving the forests. Dr. Balete noted that these unique mammals will only thrive when old growth forests are protected and secondary growth are allowed to regenerate.
