Forest Foundation Philippines Approves Over PHP 47M in Grants

February 8, 2018

MANILA, PHILIPPINES – During its first quarterly meeting for 2018, the Forest Foundation Philippines’ Board of Trustees (BOT) approved over PHP 47 M in medium and large grants to support projects that can contribute to the protection and sustainable management of the country’s most critical forest landscapes.

In addition, the BOT approved the consultancy agreement with the Ateneo School of Government for the study of non-wood forest products and high value crop markets in Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental, and Northern Sierra Madre. Through the consultancy, the Foundation hopes to provide economic opportunities to communities so they can view forest protection not just an environmental obligation, but also an economic incentive.

In 2017, the Foundation approved over PHP 280 M in grants. Around PHP 250 M was allocated for the protection of the forests in the focal landscapes, approximately PHP 25M was allocated for national policy and advocacy support, and over PHP 9 M was allocated for the protection of mangroves. To ensure that the Foundation will be continuously able to contribute to the protection and sustainable management of the forests, the Foundation’s financing capacity is expected to increase this year.

The Forest Foundation Philippines, established in 2002 under the Tropical Forest Conservation Agreements signed by the governments of the United States and the Philippines, is a non-profit organization that provides grants to organizations that empower the people to protect the forests.
